Banyan Botanicals Quality Standards
As professional herbalists, we try our best to hold the sources of our medicine to the highest standards possible: organic, fair traded, sustainably sourced, and free of heavy metals. Rarely do companies meet the standards we would want for ourselves, our families, and professionally for our patients. Banyan Botanicals is such a rare source. They continually meet, and where possible go beyond, the industry standard for high quality purity and potency in it’s herbal products.
Ayurveda Wellness Counselors are a new breed of herbalists on the front lines of herbal medicine. Our work is clinical. Though we don’t do the hard work of growing the herbs, we are the translators between the forces of nature and our clients. But there are many intermediary elements that can contaminate the purity of nature before it gets to our patients. The good work of Banyan Botanicals has eliminated that, and has provided for us a source of beautiful herbal products that we can trust in the hands and bodies of our patients.
Banyan Botanicals is focused on providing the highest quality Ayurvedic herbs possible. They begin with a firm commitment to certified organic growing and environmentally sustainable harvesting practices. Nearly all of their bulk herbs are USDA certified organically grown. Those that are not certified are organically grown without pesticides and will become certified organic when possible.
Organic herbs are produced by farmers who emphasize the use of renewable resources and the conservation of soil and water to enhance environmental quality for future generations. Organic farming enhances ecological harmony by:
- Promoting biodiversity, biological cycles and soil enrichment
- Utilizing methods that minimize pollution from air, soil and water
- Optimizing the health of soil, plant, animals and people
Some companies market their herbs as “organic”, but unless they are USDA certified by an accredited certifying agency of the National Organics Program (NOP) they have not been legally validated as organic. The NOP is the gold standard in the United States for certified organic materials. All of Banyan’s organic herbs and products are USDA certified organic.
Most Ayurvedic herbs are wild-harvested without regard for long-term effects on the species or the environment. Many widely used plants are threatened and in danger of being unavailable either through extinction or protective legislation. Banyan Botanicals is working to reverse this trend by supporting sustainable projects that use ecologically friendly methods of farming and harvesting. Our partner farms:
- Prevent over-harvesting through cultivation in natural forest settings
- Harvest with respect for the life of the plant
- Use sustainable techniques like root dividing, pruning, and seed planting
Banyan Botanicals is committed to trading fairly with everyone involved in the farming and production of their herbs.
- Banyan Botanicals pays farmers a fair and stable price for their products
- Banyan Botanicals provides extra income for farmers to improve their quality of living
- Banyan Botanicals assists small farmers in achieving a stronger position in world markets
- Banyan Botanicals supplies a closer link between consumers and products
Many of the projects Banyan Botanicals supports are organized in cooperatives that are made up of 10-20 families working together as a group. The farmers have genuine love for growing plants that are used in healing and a passion for organic farming. When you purchase our products, you are supporting these families and the positive choices they make.
Banyan Botanicals tests their herbs and products for arsenic, cadmium, lead and mercury using independent U.S. laboratories. All of their products are within the safety guidelines stipulated by the American National Standards Institute/National Sanitation Foundation International Dietary Supplement Standard 173 (ANSI 173).
